    The presentation will cover changes in the regulations as they pertain to employer sponsored wellness plans.  The regulations covered will focus on HIPAA, ADA, and GINA, with secondary emphasis on other employee benefit laws.  The presentation will cover the intersection of these laws and how they interact.

    1. Broaden understanding of what constitutes a wellness plan
    2. Broaden understanding of the various laws and regulations that apply to wellness plans
    3. Explain how the various laws and regulations that apply to wellness plans interact with one another

    Amanda Swanson is a 2016 graduate from William Mitchell College of Law and is a licensed attorney in the State of Minnesota. She graduated in the top 20% of her class, was a Mitchell Fellow, and received the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in her Torts class. Amanda graduated Magna Cum Laude from Hamline University in 2013 with her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, and a minor in Philosophy. She is a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, and Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society.

    Amanda joined The Hays Companies on a part-time basis in the Spring of 2015 and was hired into a full-time position in the summer of 2016.  Currently, she is responsible for assisting with Form 5500 filings and provides in-depth employee welfare benefits laws and guidance research and analysis as a member of The Hays Companies Research and Compliance Team.

    Nick Karls is an Associate Director in the Employee Benefits division for the Hays Companies.  Nick started with Hays in 2013 and is the creator of Hays CoreCompliance, a web-based tool for comprehensive compliance reviews of employee welfare benefit plans.

    Nick received his BA from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 2007 and his JD from the University of St. Thomas School of Law in 2012.  Nick is licensed to practice law in the State of Minnesota.

    Before joining Hays Companies and going to law school, Nick worked in the Consumer Division of the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office as a Mediator.  While working in the Attorney General’s Office, Nick developed an expertise in the fields of consumer health care, consumer finance, as well as the Minnesota regulatory framework.  In his position as a Mediator, Nick worked to resolve issues between Minnesota residents and various businesses and corporations, as well as monitoring the business practices of the various businesses and corporations for compliance with Minnesota’s consumer protection statutes.
